I am in LOVE with this design of Chapel Rock. I fell in love with this tree when I first laid eyes on it about 13 years ago. I’ve always known this tree as a White Pine, but it has many names. The Native Americans called it the “Tree of Peace.” This tree was all over the State of Michigan and was once the Lumber Barons most sought after timber. Before we ravaged our land of it, some trees were known to be 500 years old and up to 200 feet tall. WOW.
I have only seen this specific tree at the Pictured Rocks from a far. The picture on ALL of our tags was taken by me in 2010. Some day I want to see this tree in person from the shore, it is a small hike, but I need to do so before it is too late. Imagine the Northern winds that rock this tree, yet, it still stands strong on a pillar of stone. This tree can’t be much more than 100 years old, and might not even be that old. Imagine when the Lumber Barons were ravaging our great State of Michigan of this tree. Free from greed and destruction. This little sapling was just sprouting on this pillar of stone. Even though there was death of her siblings all around, this tree was hidden from Man and even separated from land. This one was truly a “Tree of Peace.”
